Recognizing God’s Voice in a Noisy World
Shawn Boltz shares keys on hearing the voice of God.
As we cross over into 2020, it is vital that we learn to hear God’s voice as He gives us direction for the new year.
For some believers, hearing God’s voice can feel like a shot in the dark – how can we be confident that we are actually hearing from God? Spiritual adviser, producer, media personality and minister Shawn Bolz is passionate about helping people learn how to hear the voice of God and communicate His heart to the world.
How do you know when God is speaking to you? How do you personally hear from Him?
God and I share the same headspace. He has shared with me His mind, so most of the time His thoughts are just downloaded into my mind and I hear dialogues directly from Him. Impressions, downloads, thought waves, His inner voice — they all help me to apply the Bible to life and to know His secrets as if they were mine.
What would you say to someone who asks you how they personally can grow in their ability to hear from God?
The first step to hearing from God is desiring to do so – you have to have a desire to hear from Him.
Second, you need to set aside time to listen to Him. If you’re not willing to give Him time it will be tough to ever hear what He is speaking.
Third, celebrate when you do hear from God!
Finally, you need to share the story of hearing His voice with someone you are in fellowship with. Build a history of recognizing your “God moments” and keep being intentional as you go after them.
“I think when God does not speak, it is because He trusts me with the Kingdom He has released to me.”
1 Corinthians 14:1 is awesome in The Message translation: “Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it — because it does.”
Do you ever experience the silence of God? Are there times you ask Him for direction and don’t hear from Him?
When God is silent on an issue, I feel like He wants me to choose. As a Father, He has such great joy instilling His Kingdom and character in me, and then letting me be a powerful human who makes powerful choices. I think when God does not speak, it is because He trusts me with the Kingdom He has released to me.
How do you pursue God in the midst of your busy schedule?
To me, pursuing God means trust and focus. It means being intentional to love with all your heart. This is awakened in my spiritual life, which is grounded on the fact that I thrive on connection. Whether it is my relationship with my wife, my kids, or God, I need that quality time and actual connection points – these bring about an inner joy and patience for everything else in life.
For me, time with God is not only traditional or devotion-based. I have developed a deep sense of being present with Him through varied methods, such as prayer, creativity, and music.
How then can you tell when you are having something that is merely a good idea, or when it is a “God idea”?
Good ideas and God ideas are so similar, and they both cost you a lot. But when it is a God idea, His energy is added to it and it typically does not take as much raw grit to perform. I think I look for ideas God will empower so that He will work on it with me instead of it being a self-made effort.
“My vision for the future is that spiritual intelligence — knowing who God is and what He wants — will increase. Then we will find Christians all over the world who know how to shift and then transform culture in all spheres of influence.”
To tell the difference between the two takes experience and time. I have worked with several people in the past when I was learning the difference. They seemed to know how to get involved with God’s projects, and I volunteered for them so that I could learn from their processes.
What is the “master key” to accessing the mysteries of God?
Surrender. Pray this: “Lord, I surrender my will and agenda to give you everything, and I know you will reform it and give it back in a greater form. Even if the process that you take me through is not the one I would choose, I want a different result than I could get in my own strength. So I will not judge the different type of process you are bringing me through to see something happen that is beyond me.”
My vision for the future is that spiritual intelligence — knowing who God is and what He wants — will increase. Then we will find Christians all over the world who know how to shift and then transform culture in all spheres of influence. In this way, no matter what the enemy is doing or what man is not doing, God will be on display and Jesus will be accumulating His reward.
